STAGE 1 - PROLOGUE
Rotorua 3 April ⫸ Te Putake O Tawa Carpark, Tarawera Road ⨠ Distance : 10.2km ⩓ Elevation: 306m The prologue sets the scene for the next four days of racing. Meet your fellow riders, get into the swing of riding with the Volcanic Epic and set your seeding for the following day. Once you have checked in you can head straight out on to the course, there is no set start times. The feature trail in the prologue is Mahana, a short, fast flow trail that will be sure to curate a few whoops and hell yeahs from the riders. The trail was build by the Rotorua Trails Trust & recently opened in December 2023 |

STAGE 2
Rotorua 4 April ⫸ Te Putake O Tawa Carpark, Tarawera Road ⨠ Distance : 44.8km ⩓ Elevation: 1,413m Stage 1 is a loop format. Based in the same location of the prologue, today riders will take on flowing single track and punchy hills within Whakarewarewa forest, a world-class trail destination. You'll experience both native and exotic forest with views of Mt Tarawera, Lakes Okareka, Tikitapu, Rotokakahi & Rotorua. The feature trail of this stage is Tuteata.

Stage 3
Taupo 5 April ⫸ Owen Delany Park, Delany Drive ⨠ Distance : 62.1km (53.2km + 8.9km rollback) ⩓ Elevation: 1,495m Stage 2 is a loop format, and will start/finish on the fringes of the Taupo at Owen Delany Park. Riders head along the trails of the Waikato River and pass Huka Falls before crossing into the amazing volcanic pumice-based trails of Craters MTB park. The first 48km is on the race segment with the final 8km set as a neutral rollback to the finishline.
We are stoked to be back riding at Craters MTB park after missing out in 2023 due to the total destruction of the forest during Cyclone Gabriel. Craters MTB park is managed by Bike Taupo and you must have a membership to ride here outside of the event, get a membership to ride here |

STAGE 4
Tokoroa 6 April ⫸ Tokoroa War Memorial Sports Ground, Mossop Road ⨠ Distance : 35km ⩓ Elevation: 787m Stage 3 is a loop format and will start/finish at Tokoroa War Memorial Sports Grounds. Riders will by riding nearly every trail in Cougar MTB Park!
Voted the #1 stage of 2023, The dirt is just different here, with undulating flowy singletrack, towering rocks and fern lined berms. The feature trail is Speedy Cheater which is a fast flowing downhill trail leading into the finish of the stage. |
Stage 5
Rotorua 7 April ⫸ Te Puia, Hemo Road 🏁 Government Gardens, 1220 Hinemaru Street ⨠ Distance : 36km ⩓ Elevation: 801m Stage 4 is a point to point format starting at Te Puia and finishing at Government Gardens CBD. Stage 4 brings us back to the epic landscapes of Rotorua.
From geothermal to native forest, the ride will go through the woop-inducing singletrack of the Whakarewarewa forest before bringing riders home via the alien-like Sulphur Flats. |
